Traditional Roadway

The Riverbank area in Kilkenny is one of the most attractive urban areas anywhere in Ireland, with Kilkenny Castle providing the backdrop. The old lighting was recently replaced with a newer modern system of HPS, but with a traditional appearance.

With 8m Heritage Poles, Avonnaise 75 brackets, and Vence Pendant Luminaires with a copper and black finish, the scheme has received much favourable comment. The Project was specified by the Local Authoritity and installed by the ESB (Airtricity).

Parking & Roadway

The Lighting along the main road through the IDA Industrial Park in Waterford provides several functions, namely the illumination of the carpark, illumination of the adjoining road, and illumination of the area between the road and the Building.

Post Top Versions of the Optra were specified by Consultant Engineers VMRA and installed by Kentz. The Luminaire has the advantages of high light levels with wide Pole spacings and also full flat-glass cut-off to minimise glare and light spill.

Feature Lighting

The Retail Centre at Charlesland, near Bray in County Wicklow was supplied with 4 ‘Wand’ Luminaires. These add a decorative feature to the entrance area as well as attracting the attention of passing traffic.

The Wand can be supplied in Stainless Steel or in other Metals. The Lens can be supplied in frosted or clear Polycarbonate. This Luminaire is now upgraded to operate with LED light sources and colour changing is now an option.

Restaurant

This small Restaurant in Clonmel, County Tipperary had a high ceiling and natural light entered the room from a skylight. The SoftBay Luminaires supplied complimented this as they had acrylic prismatic diffusers throwing light in all directions, but mainly down.

The Softbays can be supplied in Compact Fluorescent and with a dimming system to be controlled by daylight and/or occupancy sensors.

A continuous Metal Profile and a narrow beam Fluorescent lighting system were the main elements in the illumination of the Facade of this Multi-storey carpark in Drury Street Dublin.

Origin Luminaires with Dalia brackets and Constant Diameter Poles were used on this Gala Retail Outlet in Rosleven, Ennis, Co Clare.

Origin Luminaires in a larger version were also supplied in the nearby Ennis Information Age Park.

Playground

This Playground in Bunbeg, Co Donegal has recently upgraded and new lighting was added. The Optra Luminaires were chosen because each one can illuminate a large amount of space and it was important to minimise the number of Poles. The other advantages were that it has a flat glass cut-off to minimise glare and light spill and being of robust construction, is difficult to vandalise.

The illumination of Playgrounds also reduces vandalism to the rest of the Playground, extends the opening hours and provides added safety and comfort to users.

Ashtown in West Dublin is a new suburb with its DART station and a new town centre as shown. Instead of using a standard road lighting system, the planners wanted to combine the lighting with a Feature.

The Forked Columns provided include some Floodlights for local illumination and give the new centre a distinctive appearance.

Workshop

This Fluorescent lighting scheme at the FAS workshop in Waterford uses modern T5 electronic lighting.

Unlike traditional (T8) Fluorescents, these Luminaires can punch more light downwards and with no flicker, they are better for eyesight and cause less fatigue and eye strain. Lamp life is an average of 20,000 hours, so maintenance/relamping is also reduced.

Canopy Downlighters

The entrance area to the Ramada Viking Hotel on the outskirts of Waterford provides a high level of recessed lighting. As well as the safety and comfort factor, it distinguishes the entrance area from other parts of the Hotel and visitors know instantly where to go.

Using IP65 rated recessed Luminaires and Compact Fluorescent lamps with a warm colour temperature, the lighting helps the Hotel to look inviting to passing traffic.

Residential Roadway

An attractive decorative lighting sysytem was installed at Hainault Road in Foxrock. Although traditional in appearance, the scheme is efficient and uses Vence 150w HPS Luminaires, with Avonnaise 75 decorative brackets and 8m Heritage Columns, all in Black finish.

The Vence Luminaire is available in different sizes and has the option of Pendant mounting (as shown) or Post-top mounting.
Installations with Post-top mounting include Dun Laoghaire Golf Club or Dunboyne Castle Hotel in Co Meath.

Car Showroom

This bright and well illuminated Car showroom is illuminated with only a few Softbay Luminaires. The advantages are minimal installation initially and minimal maintenance and energy use over the lifetime of the Project.

The Luminaire provides uses a prismatic reflector system to ensure most light goes down but there is also approx 15% uplight and the entire room is illuminated.

Conference Hall

The O’Reilly Hall in UCD is well known for its graduation, conference and seminar activities. The lighting system, specified by VMRA, uses recessed Spectra Luminaires with dimmable Metal Halide lamps.

The Spectra is ideal for Auditoriums and Conference Halls with high ceilings, as it can provide high light levels and has a choice of reflector systems and accessories.

Hurling Wall

St Martins GAA Club in Pearsetown, Co Wexford opened a new purpose built Hurling Wall in 2009. Illuminated with S Series Floodlights to provide high illuminated levels, but with minimum glare (especially as both sides of the Hurling Wall are used).

Similar schemes have been installed in several GAA Clubs in recent years.

Tesco in Lisburn, near Belfast is illuminated with Supralite Luminaires.
This Luminaire combines high light levels with wide Pole spacings to provide excellent savings on Luminaires, Poles and installation (Bases, underground wiring, etc). Typically 4 Luminaires will illuminate an area of 100m x 100m to recommended lighting carpark standards.

Multi-storey Carpark

The Round Parklite with a 200w Pulse Metal Halide lamp was installed in to this carpark at Parkwest in West Dublin, close to the M50.

The Parklite is designed for busy carparks where high light levels and the minimum number of Luminaires is required, and with minimum maintenance and relamping. The light produced is a crisp white and like all Parklite schemes, there is minimum clutter.

Golf Range

The HQ of the Golf Union of Ireland at Carton House, Maynooth, Co Kildare has a state-of-the-art Golf Range. The illumination for this Project consisted of a mixture of 2 Floodlight types and high vertical light levels, even at a distance of 250m. Consultant Engineers were PMC.
Luminaires were modified to better fit the Building and both Luminaire and Poles were supplied in a special RAL finish.

Other Golf Ranges supplied include Tramore, Co Waterford; Newry, Co Armagh; Glenlo Abbey Hotel, Galway; etc.

External Carpark

Trapez Series Luminaires are used in the ‘Information Age Park’ in Ennis, County Clare. Specified by Consultant Engineers VMRA, all Luminaires and Poles were supplied in a specific RAL finish to match the Building.

Other Projects with the Trapez include GMIT in Galway, the Roscrea Golf Club in County Tipperary and UCC in Cork.

Food Processing Facility

The Food Industry requires special Luminaires. Glass is usually forbidden and as a breakage could contaminate food and machinery. Also, Luminaires need to be dust and dirt tight and sometimes to be capable of being washed down.

The WideBay Luminaire used in Hilton Meats has the advantage of being dust and water tight, a high performance acrylic lens (which has passed a rupture test) and a protected lamp (A Lamp which is not protected may break and burn through the lens). The control gear can be supplied as part of the Luminaire or can be remote (for easier access).

For a modern new Office Block is the centre of Letterkenny, Consultant Engineers Wallace Whittle chose a contemporary high performing Optra Luminaire. Only 3 Luminaires were required to illuminate the carpark, pedestrian and adjoining areas.

With full cut-off and significant anti-glare features, the Optra is ideal for built-up urban areas, providing high light levels at wide Pole spacings, yet is dark skies friendly and sensitive to adjoining properties.

The European HQ of E-Bay in Ballycoolin, Dublin is illuminated using Altair Streetlight Luminaires and Louvered Bollards. Specified by leading Engineering Consultancy PMC.

Bollards are available on request with various heights, finishes, aluminium or stainless steel, flanged or rooted, with or without illumination, with optional anti-vandal features, with LED optics, with emergency, with internal occupancy sensor control, with photocell, dimming, etc.

The worlds largest Bio-pharmaceutical Facility is the Pfizer (Wyeth) site at Grangecastle in Dublin. The outside lighting of the large carparks uses the highly efficient Supralite Luminaires. Also supplied to this site were Street lighting Luminaires, decorative and functional Bollards, Warehouse lighting and Internal office lighting.

Specified by leading Engineering Consultants Jacobs, the Supralites have the economic advantage that only 4 are needed to illuminate an area of approx 100m by 100m.

The M1 Retail Park near the Boyne Bridge in Co Louth is one of Irelands most attractive retail complexes. The lighting plays a significant role in this.

Using architectural Altair Luminaires which feature a white semi-transparent lens and Constant Diameter Poles, the entire carparking area is bought to life at night time.

The new Carlton Hotel outside Kinsale is illuminated with Merrion Luminaires and Swan neck brackets. Columns, brackets and Luminaires are all supplied in an architectural RAL finish to match the Building.

Specified by leading Engineers EDC, the Product was also used on the nearby Blarney Tower Hotel.

Basement Carpark

The first impression to a Hotel, Retail complex or other Building is often the Basement carpark. Consulting Engineers R N Murphy, specified the ultra slim Round Parkdisc for the Clarion Hotel in the centre of Cork. Unlike Linear Luminaires, the round Parkdiscs do not need to be orientated in a particular way to suit the driving lanes.

Options include Sensor control for switching off when the carpark is vacant as well as an emergency version.

Sports Pitch

The lighting at the new All Weather Pitch at Faythe Harriers which opened in 2009 was described by the Club as ‘exceeding all expectations’.
The Pitch is rented out to different clubs for training and matches so it sees soccer, rugby and gaelic football as well as hurling players.

The lighting consists of 2Kw Flat glass Floodlights to minimise glare and light spill which is a concern for Clubs located in residential and built up areas.

Swimming Pool

Youghal Swimming Pool is illuminated with Wall Mounted Floodlights which provide both direct and indirect illumination. The Project was specified by Consultant Engineers JODA.

With a bright ceiling, it is possible to use Floodlights directed the Ceiming to illuminate the Pool. If the Ceiling is darker or obstructed, the Floodlights can provide all or some of the illumination directly at the Pool, with a small percentage at the ceiling for effect.

The Floodlight itself is designed for outdoor usage so is ideal for the moist or wet interior of a swimming pool.

Retail Store Pathways

Motorists who use the Kilkenny Ring Road are immediately alerted to the dramatic Smithlands Shopping Centre, which is anchored by Woodies and a Days Hotel.

Several Pathways which lead from the large carparks to the Building are illuminated with Palace Luminaires. These indirect fittings provide both a functional local lighting purpose and are an attractive reminder that the Complex is open for potential customers. The Consulting Engineers were Noel Lawlers in Kilkenny. Origin Luminaires were used for the illumination of the carparks and the entrance roads.

Small Retail Carpark

Many retail stores have small carparks which only require 1 or 2 Luminaires to illuminate properly. This saves on initial costs such as Luminaires, Poles, groundworks and concrete bases, underground wiring etc, and also ongoing costs such as electricity and maintenance.

Another benefit is the extra space provided by minimising Poles and the general improved appearance from reduction in clutter.

LIDL for example have used high performance Luminaires in many of their carparks (including Clonmel, Co Tipperary shown). Typically, only 1 Pole has been required.

Aircraft Hanger

One of the largest Industrial Building in Ireland, the FLS Hanger is also the most visable, being at the entrance to Dublin Airport.

The Building was illuminated with SoftBays manufactured in Waterford by VeeLite Lighting. The SoftBay is a highly efficient Luminaire and also provides typically 15% uplight so the ceiling is also illuminated.
