Solar & Wind powered lighting can be economical in remote areas, where the cost of connecting to the Grid would be difficult or expensive.
County Carlow Local Authority had a carpark to illuminate which was
used by Tourists and Locals for Walking and general sight seeing. When these walkers returned to their carpark after dark, it was both a discomfort and a safety concern in finding their car. It was not practical to connect to the electricity grid as the nearest connection point was several kimometers away.
Instead a Stand alone Wind & Solar powered LED lighting system was installed, with automatic occupancy sensor control and a time delay mechanism to allow users to vacate the carpark slowly. With anticipated 2 hours of use per night and a 2 week battery backup, the system is designed for year round usage.
